Advice on how to proceed ?
by man in black in.
one of my son's who is 21 recently met a person in one of his classes at the local college who is a pioneer ( parents are forcing him to do it).. this person (lets call him ted) is really fed up with this religion.
and is seriously considering ways to leave.. his dad is a pioneer/elder, mom is a pioneer also, i don't know if there are any brothers or sisters.. my son wants to proceed carefully, mom and dad don't know who we are, or what our status in the religion is.. they sound like uber-control people, they always check teds cell phone to see who he is talking to (the kid is 18).. he is planning to move out next year, do any of you have any suggestions as to how he could/should proceed ?.

I think the best thing your son can do is be a true friend to this young man . It is probably the first time he has been able to fully express himself about the JW religion w/o fear of judgement . Being a good listener could do wonders for him sorting out his new found feelings .e
I would be careful because he is most likely still dependent upon his family for support financially . (However your son could open up conversations about how others have gained independence and how soon enough they all have to learn to stand alone .)

I did at first . Usually I would only look at this site when everyone was gone from the house to work or school . When I first started reading things on here we had another teenage witness living with us and I didn't want him seeing what i was up to either . Funny now how paranoid I was about it then.
Now i openly post on here and share what I am reading with my husband or kids if they are around . Just this a few weeks ago I sent a link to a topic to one of my sons ,and he decided to start an account too. I am pretty sure my husband has lurked a bit himself .
Fear is such a huge factor in being a Jehovah's Witness ...... it feels so good to let that go and just live life .

VIDEO: United Breaks Guitars
by SnakesInTheTower inthere is a video that went viral and hit #7 on time magazine's top viral videos of 2009. as of this post, it had hit 8.1 million plus views since it was posted july 6, 2009.. it is a country music style song parody of united airlines treatment of his expensive taylor guitar.
he has since done the other 2 videos in the trilogy.
i don't usually like country music, but i liked ths.. this little incident cost united $180 million dollars in the value of its stock in 4 days.... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/chris_ayres/article6722407.ece i have not checked the veracity of that particular claim, but if true...damn.. united breaks guitars (posted 7/6/2009 -- 8.1 millions views as of 3/18/2010).

GOOD FOR HIM !!! I hope it is true that his videos has cost United a little something .......
Flying United out of Chicago brings back bad memories for me .......we flew in from vacation in San Diego on United and they stranded us in Chicago ! When we landed we found our next flight (to home) had been canceled and NO ONE from United was any help at all . No one at the desk to answer questions or tell us what to do next (we had never flown before ) We were on our own and when we finally figured out how to obtain a stand-by ticket ,the woman at the counter said 'Good Luck with that' you probably won't get out today (it was early ,early morning !) After much horrible service and running around the airport trying to find our best options we found a business man that suggested we share a rental car and drive the rest of the way home.
It is horrible how airlines can offer such BAD service and get away with it because they can . We had purchased our tickets months in advance and at the drop of a hat they can just leave you stranded ...... Once we got home we found the local airport desk would not refund our ticket and just gave us an 1-800 number to call, thankfully that did put us in contact with someone that could refund us ,but what a nightmare .
We found out later other airlines went out of their way to appease their passengers when fights were cancelled ,giving free tickets and actually apologizing for the inconvinence ......IMAGINE that

I guess my youngest son is definitely NOT going either ! He found an invite stuck in his girlfriends door and he shredded it into pieces and threw it away .
Today an old friend mailed me an invite in an envelope ....no note or message just a folded up invite ......better than the email I got last year ,haha
Mary your a good daughter to do that for your parents ! If my Mom were still alive I would probably do that for her too .
My husbands Mom lives a thousand miles away so we don't get pressure from her .

More "sex texting" on Facebook...Circuit Assembly
by dudeson inso my congregation just had their circuit assembly on 3/14.
recalling the thread about "facebook sex", i told a non-witness friend at work that after this assembly is over he would notice one of our mutual friends would either lower his time on fb or delete it altogether.
sure enough, come sunday night, his profile was gone.

I recently had a JW from the past message me on facebook for my JW brothers information ,so i added him as a friend . In one message sent he said He didn't care about the circumstances and didn't want to hear about them he just wanted to get in contact with my brother again "Friends are Forever " were his words .....I don't know if he meant my circumstances or my brothers ?? But after I sent the information he never replied again and then he deleted me as a 'friend' ......i guess forever is a very short time ..?

Do You Personally Know Of Anyone That Committed Suicide?
by minimus inlately, i've come to find out that a more than a few people in the area had killed themselves.
most of the people i know of were in their early twenties or forties.
for those loved ones surviving them, it was mostly a shock!

I personally have known two young people that have committed suicide in the past few years . It is heart breaking to see such potential wiped out in a single action . A very close friend to my sons killed herself March 31,2006, she had just turned 17 . She had been raised in a divided witness home and she was trying to live in both worlds . One of the sweetest ,kindest ,funniest kids you would ever want to know . To this day her freinds from school still post on her myspace account telling her about their lives and wishing she was here to share it with them . Depression of course was one part of the reason she took her life ,but depression is never the only reason . It is a building block of reasons , problems , unhealthly thinking patterns that accumalate until one day the load is too heavy to bear anymore ........
This past October a young man, 25, from our former hall hung himself . He had also been a close friend to my sons. He had been raised in a very large JW family that is known for their over bearing judgemental attitudes . He also had depression problems which he tried to self medicate for sometime . I heard he was just now getting proper treatment ,but he killed himself out of utter loss of hope that he would get better.
